Our School
We follow the national curriculum and focus on the 3 aims – problem solving, reasoning and fluency. Discussion is a big part of our learning and we work hard to ensure that children are given the opportunity to share their ideas with the adults and children within the classroom. This is key to enabling children to process information and explain their reasoning.
We believe that all students can succeed in mathematics. We don’t believe that there are individuals who can do maths and those that can’t. A positive teacher mindset and strong subject knowledge are key to student success in mathematics. Maths is taught daily throughout all year groups and we value the use of models, images and resources. We follow the concrete, pictorial, abstract approach and ensure that children have a solid understanding before moving on. Maths meetings are carried out throughout the week in order to practise skills. We also do maths quizzes weekly to give children a chance to revisit prior learning.
We use the White Rose maths scheme and small steps as the basis for our planning, however adapt when necessary to meet the needs of our children. At present, we are part of the Mastery Development program run by the NCTEM and therefore also use their resources. We are committed to ensuring that children are able to recognise the importance of Maths in the wider world and that they are also able to use their mathematical skills and knowledge confidently in their lives in a range of different contexts.
